THE FIFTH HORSEMAN

DESCRIPTION:
The Fifth Horseman is a really special piece to me. I think it's one of my very best ever. The name is derived from the Revelations of the Bible, where the four horsemen of the apocalypse bring plague and ruin to mankind at the end of the world.

When I made this picture, I had this image that there was a fifth horseman that nobody could tell what to do, and that horseman could bring anything it wanted to mankind and all the forces in the universe couldn't do anything about it. In my musings, I imagined this Fifth Horseman as the only thing between mankind and ruin... but always just barely siding with mankind to prevent the destruction of the world.

In a nutshell, to me this piece signifies the archetype of the wildcard, which, in this case, worked out well for civilization... but it's always a constant teetering on the edge - and could just as easily be destruction as salvation.
