COUNTRY
DESCRIPTION:
Our Country is a little bit political-- which is unusual for me. Just
as a lot of people did, after 9/11 my thoughts turned somewhat patriotic.
After that I had a strong nation-centric association with this piece because
of its colors.
I
look at it as the Red, White and Blue of our flag, mixed together with
the red, black, brown, yellow and white of our people. To me, the political
part of this piece is its vertical orientation, with the yellow on the
bottom, because so much of the west where I live, and the San Francisco
that I love, was built on the backs of the Chinese laborers.
I also display this piece horizonally, which, oddly, removes its political
connotations for me.
